Beginning with StorNext 7, your system can accept each of the following license models, but only operates using one license model:

The perpetual (license.dat) license. This license model applies if you upgraded your system to StorNext 7 (or later) software. For example, if you upgrade from StorNext 6.4 software to StorNext 7 (or later) software.
The StorNext 7 subscription (product key) license. This subscription license model applies to a new Quantum system pre-installed with StorNext 7 (or later) software, customer supplied hardware (where a customer installs StorNext 7 (or later) software), or if you convert/migrate your system from the perpetual (license.dat) license model to the StorNext 7 subscription (product key) subscription license model.

The Product Key page allows you to do the following:

Enter or update your StorNext 7 (or later) license product key. The StorNext 7 license product key is located in the StorNext License Confirmation letter that was delivered to you in an email upon the purchase of your StorNext 7 license. If you supply your own hardware, you must enter a valid serial number and a unique product key for each node of your system.
Note: If you upgraded your system to StorNext 7 (or later) software and your system is already using a perpetual (license.dat) license, you do not need to enter a product key.
Convert/migrate your system from the perpetual (license.dat) license to the StorNext 7 subscription (product key) license. In order to convert/migrate your system, you must have a StorNext 7 license product key (contact your Quantum Sales representative to obtain a product key). The StorNext 7 license product key is located in the StorNext License Confirmation letter that was delivered to you in an email upon the purchase of your StorNext 7 license. If you supply your own hardware, you must enter a valid serial number and a unique product key for each node of your system.
Caution: If you convert/migrate from the perpetual (license.dat) license to the StorNext 7 (product key) license, then your system requires a restart of all services. The restart operation might take several minutes, which depends on the load on the system. All file systems are offline during the restart operation.

Under both scenarios listed above, if you are running a high availability (HA) system, the process first validates your product key.

If your product key is valid, then the system enters into Config mode, and then you can input your product key. After you input your product key, then the system exits out of Config mode and restarts all services. The restart operation might take several minutes, which depends on the load on the system. All file systems are offline during the restart operation.
If your product key is not valid, then a dialog appears informing you that the product key you entered is not valid.

The Valid Product Key field on the Product Key page provides information about the status of the license on your system.

Not Required is displayed if your system is already using a perpetual (license.dat) license. If you want to convert your system from using a perpetual license to a product key license, see Convert from a Perpetual License to a Subscription (Product Key) License.
Yes is displayed if you have installed a valid StorNext 7 (or later) product key.
No is displayed if you have not installed a valid StorNext 7 (or later) product key, and your use or scope of use of StorNext software on the system is out of compliance with the authorized use and the StorNext Software End User License Agreement (EULA). Convert from a Perpetual License to a Subscription (Product Key) License

Do the following to convert your system from using a perpetual license to a product key license.

Note: In order to convert/migrate your system, you must have a StorNext 7 license product key. The StorNext 7 license product key is located in the StorNext License Confirmation letter that was delivered to you in an email upon the purchase of your StorNext 7 license.

Caution: If you convert/migrate from the perpetual (license.dat) license model to the StorNext 7 (product key) license model, then your system requires a restart of all services. The restart operation might take several minutes, which depends on the load on the system. All file systems are offline during the restart operation.

On the Service menu, click Product key. The Service > Product Key page appears.
If your system is a Quantum Appliance, then proceed to Step 3. In the Serial Number field, enter a valid serial number. This field only appears if you install StorNext 7 (or later) on your own hardware.
In the Product Key field, enter your StorNext 7 (or later) license product key. If you supply your own hardware, you must enter a unique product key for each node of your system.

Note: The StorNext 7 license product key is located in the StorNext License Confirmation letter that was delivered to you in an email upon the purchase of your StorNext 7 license.
Click Apply. You are prompted to confirm that you want to perform the conversion.

Caution: If you convert/migrate from the perpetual (license.dat) license model to the StorNext 7 (product key) license model, then your system requires a restart of all services. The restart operation might take several minutes, which depends on the load on the system. All file systems are offline during the restart operation.
Click Yes to proceed with the conversion, or click No to cancel the operation and return to the previous page.
Click Done to exit the Product Key page.

Note: The conversion process automatically removes the license.dat file from your system and replaces the file with a product_key entry in the /usr/cvfs/config/ directory. You do not need to remove the license.dat file from your system.
