Hardware Overview

The Quantum Xcellis Workflow Director (Gen 2) system is a workflow storage system with various configurations and options to meet your evolving storage performance and capacity needs. The StorNext Unified User Interface and the StorNext UI provide ongoing holistic monitoring of your entire StorNext environment after initial configuration.

System components include:

  • One or two server nodes
  • One RAID Chassis
  • JBOD/Expansion Chassis (optional)
  • Additional RAID Chassis (optional)
  • Additional JBOD/Expansion Chassis connected to the additional RAID chassis (optional)

The system includes either a single server configuration or a two server node configuration (which provides high availability [HA] failover operation). The base configuration, comes with 64 GB server memory and supports up to 32 file systems. Memory upgrade kits are available which support additional file systems and the Dynamic Application Environment to host virtual machines on the system (see System Software: The Dynamic Application Environment) .The system provides unified file sharing using one or more of the following:

  • StorNext SAN
  • StorNext LAN
  • NAS (SMB/NFS)

Solid blue Indicates that the system is turned on, system is healthy, and system ID mode is not active. Press the system health and system ID button to switch to system ID mode.
Blinking blue Indicates that the system ID mode is active. Press the system health and system ID button to switch to system health mode.
Solid amber Indicates that the system is in fail-safe mode. If the problem persists, contact Quantum Support.
Blinking amber Indicates that the system is experiencing a fault. Check the System Event Log or the LCD panel, if available on the bezel, for specific error message.

Each drive carrier has an activity LED indicator and a status LED indicator. The indicators provide information about the current status of the drive. The activity LED indicator indicates whether the drive is currently in use or not. The status LED indicator indicates the power condition of the drive.

System identification button

The System Identification (ID) button is available on the front and back of the systems. Press the button to identify a system in a rack by turning on the system ID button.

a Items 5, 6, and 7 are ports of the network daughter card, which is pre-installed in the system.

Note: DO NOT connect anything to the serial port connector on the rear of the system. If something is connected to the serial port, the server will be unable to boot when a reboot is initiated.

Each NIC on the back panel has indicators that provide information about the activity and link status. The activity LED indicator indicates if

data is flowing through the NIC, and the link LED indicator indicates the speed of the connected network.

NIC identify is enabled through the NIC configuration utility.

AC power supply units (PSUs) have an illuminated translucent handle that serves as an indicator and DC PSUs have an LED that serves as

an indicator. The indicator shows whether power is present or a power fault has occurred.

When hot-plugging a PSU, the PSU handle blinks green five times at a rate of 4 Hz and turns off. This indicates a PSU mismatch with respect to efficiency, feature set, health status, or supported voltage.

You can locate server identification numbers, including the StorNext System Serial Number (SSN) and the Service Tag number, in the following locations:

The StorNext System Serial Number and Service Tag number are located in different locations on the server. The LCD Display Panel, located on the front of the server, displays both the model type and System Serial Number server nodes. In addition, both the System Serial Number and the Service tag number are located in multiple locations on labels on the server chassis as shown in the following image:

The System Serial Number is displayed as the StorNext Connect System Name on the Admin > This System page.

You can use the system command line to access the StorNext System Serial Number.

Steps

  1. Open an SSH connection to the appropriate server and use the IP address assigned to the node on the Management or LAN Client network, or use the Service Port IP address.

    • Node 1 : 10.17.21.1 (dual-server node systems)
    • Node 2 : 10.17.21.2 (dual-server node, or supported "HA-ready" single-server node StorNext appliances)

  2. Initiate an ssh session to the system using Terminal or PuTTY:
    1. Log in to the command line using the following credentials:
      • User name: stornext
      • Password: <stornext user account password>

        Note: "password" is the default password for the stornext user account. If the password has been changed, use the current password. Beginning with StorNext 7.0.2, you must change the default password for the stornext user account. As of StorNext 7.0.2, the first time you log in, you will be prompted to change the password to a different one.

    2. Enter sudo rootsh to gain root user access.
    3. Enter the password for the stornext user account again.
  1. Enter the cvfsid command.

    2. The system returns the following information:

    <server_MAC_address> <server_OS> <server_name>

    Example:

    ECF4BCDECC0E linux 0 xcellis13

  2. Close the SSH session for the node.

QXS 2U drive chassis provide include a bezel sub-assembly that attaches to the front panel of the chassis. The bezel, comprised of a vented cover attached to an electro-magnetic interference (EMI) shield, is pre-assembled and packed within a box contained in the chassis master shipping container. The bezel might include a removable air filter that can be serviced or replaced. Instructions for attaching/removing the bezel, and for servicing or replacing the air filter, are provided in the QXS Bezel Installation Guide.

The Controller I/O Module can be configured with converged network controller (CNC) ports and SFPs.

The SFP form factor is the same, and the optical connections look identical, but the 10 GbE iSCSI is a different SFP. Refer to the LEDs that apply to the specific CNC ports in your controller.

2 drive expansion chassis support 12 x 3.5" Large Form Factor (LFF) drives for expansion of storage capacity. The 24 drive expansion chassis support 24x2.5" Small Form Factor (SFF) drives for expansion of storage capacity. These chassis use mini-SAS (SFF-8088) connectors to facilitate attachment to the RAID Chassis and allow for additional back-end SAS expansion attachment(s).

A RAID chassis accommodates two AC power supplies (CRU) within the two power supply slots (Callout 1 above). RAID Chassis accommodate two controller modules (CRU) of the same type within the Controller I/O Module slots (Callouts 2 and 3 above).

Caution: All QXS configurations are dual-controller. Single-controller support is provided only when a controller fails over to its partner controller. A controller module must be installed in each Controller I/O Module slot to ensure sufficient airflow through the chassis during operation.

The I/O Controller Module has two model types, converged network controller (CNC) ports or mini-SAS HD. The models can be configured as follows:

  • Host CNC ports configured with SFPs supporting the following:
    • 4/8/16 Gb FC
    • 10GbE iSCSI
  • Host interface ports configured with 12 Gbit/s mini-SAS HD (SFF-8644) connectors.

The following figure shows CNC ports configured with SFP+ transceivers that support 4, 8, or 16 Gb FC, or 10 GbE iSCSI connections. The SFPs look identical. Refer to the CNC LEDs that apply to the specific configuration of your CNC ports.

12 drive Expansion Chassis support 12 x 3.5" Large Form Factor (LFF) drives for expansion of storage capacity. The 24 drive Expansion Chassis support 24x2.5" Small Form Factor (SFF) drives for expansion of storage capacity. These chassis use mini-SAS (SFF-8088) connectors to facilitate attachment to the RAID Chassis and allow for additional backend SAS expansion attachment(s).

There are a couple ways to find System Serial Numbers for your QXS chassis:

If you need Quantum support, you will need your system serial number

The system serial number is located on a label attached to the chassis (upper right-hand front corner, top of the chassis) as shown here, outlined in red (12-drive chassis shown):

The following illustration provides a representative example of a serial number label on a chassis.

System serial number in the example: QTMCHOU-12345AB678

In the Disk Storage Management Utility (V3), you will find the system serial numbers for each chassis by doing the following:

  1. Login to the Disk Storage Management Utility (V3).
  2. On the left side of the page, click System, as shown here:

  3. Move your mouse and hover over the image of the chassis you need the serial number for, as shown here:

In the Disk Storage Management Utility (V2), you will find the system serial numbers for each chassis by doing the following:

  1. Login to the Disk Storage Management Utility (V2).
  2. On the left side of the page, cascade open the section for the System Name, the Physical section, and click on the Enclosure number, as shown here (Example: selecting Enclosure 0):

  3. On the right side of the page, under Enclosure Overview, the System Serial Number is called the Midplane Serial Number for the chassis, as shown here:
