Log Reading

On July 13th and 14th, 2011 Michael Bailey from HP gave a presentation on HP LTO Log Reading. The purpose of the presentation was to encourage the most effective use of LTT in the field, subjects covered included:

• Library and Tape Tools (LTT) overview
• Using LTT to provide accurate diagnostics
• Using logs to improve diagnostic accuracy
• Using logs to reduce the warranty bill

On July 14, 2011, Steve Cooper and Jackie Renke from Quantum's Failure Analysis department discussed some additional log analysis tools. Steve discussed the i2K RasDump tool version 2.0 (starts on the Date Two recording at 2:53:00). Subjects covered included:

• Looking at the whole library, not an individual issue
• RasDump 2.0 - the solution for drive/media issues
• Using RasDump 2.0
• Using the data
• Communicating with customers

Jackie discussed how to identify problem drives and media by using pivot tables to evaluate tape alert logs from the Scalar i2000/i6000, Scalar i500, Scalar i40/i80, Scalar 10K, and SuperLoader 3 (starts on the Date Two recording at 4:11:30). Subjects covered included:

• Accessing tape alert logs from the libraries
• Importing tape alert logs into Excel
• Creating pivot tables from tape alert logs in Excel
• Evaluating the tape alert log data in a pivot table
