1 - Identify a Timeline (DRAFT)

Overview

DART/Vision will be used as the tool to get a baseline of the lifetime of the product.

Getting Started

Go to the DART repository and locate the serial number for the desired system then click on it.  For this example, we’ll use a DXi7500 owned by Harris IT:

http://dart.quantum.com/cgi-bin/stats?DB=CX0929BVA00446-20110214-123023&pr=0&start=1252593600&end=1297704622&base=1000

This Graph is the starting point when clicking on the serial number for the Harris IT box, CX0929BVA00446.  It shows a capacity pattern for the lifetime of the product which is 9/10/2009 through 2/14/2011.  From this graph you can determine the following:

  • There was a capacity upgrade in March – black line was raised
  • There was another capacity upgrade in Jun – black line was raised
  • With the steady increase in before reduction and multiple capacity upgrades it can be assumed that capacity upgrades were performed because the system kept running out of space
  • System is having severe capacity issues since May of 2010 – ( Dark Green = Blockpool) Dark Green is filling entire space between bottom of graph and the black, orange and yellow lines with a few exceptions during large deletions in Jul and Dec.
  • Between Jul and Aug they deleted a large amount of data
  • After the deletion the data jumped right backup and continued to climb steadily
  • In Dec they deleted an even larger amount of data after which a steady incline is seen again
  • Reclamation is constantly running and system is constantly truncating

Conclusion

From this lifetime graph we can assume that we have been working with this customer for approximately 1 1/2 years with capacity upgrades and recommended garbage collection jobs without any long term success.  We can look at the large dips in Before Reduction as “starting over” periods where the customer got the system back down to acceptable capacity levels.

For our Sample period on this system we’ll be starting just after the last significant decrease of Before Reduction.
