SAP HANA
Overview
SAP HANA can be configured to automatically send backups to your DXi system through the Backint interface, giving you reliable, deduplicated data protection.
To set up and configure SAP HANA database backup and recovery using your Quantum DXi-Series system, refer to SAP HANA Installation.
To perform a backup from SAP HANS to a DXi system, do the following:
-
In SAP HANA Studio, click on Backup below the database name and select Open Backup Console.
-
In the backup console configuration, confirm the destination type is set to Backint and provide the path to
QuantumPlugin.confin the log backup settings. -
Right-click on Backup and select Backup System Database.
-
Confirm the destination type is set to Backint and review the settings.
-
Click Finish to start the backup.
You can monitor progress in the backup console. A completed backup will be listed in the backup catalog with a success status.
Note: For your first backup, allow extra time as SAP HANA will perform a full database backup. Subsequent backups may be faster depending on the backup type and the amount of data changed.
To restore SAP HANA from a backup stored on your DXi system, do the following:
Note: The database will be taken offline during recovery. Ensure all users are logged out and no business processes are actively using the database before proceeding.
-
In SAP HANA Studio, right-click on your database, select Backup and Recovery, then select Recover System Database.
-
A prompt will confirm that the system must go offline to proceed. Click OK.
-
When asked to specify the location of the backup catalog, choose Search for the backup catalog in Backint only. Backint will contact your DXi appliance to retrieve the available backups.
Note: During this step, Backint internally triggers an "Inquire" operation to search the DXi for the backup catalog. This is automatic. There is no manual action required. This activity can be observed in the Backint plugin log file if needed.
-
Select the backup you want to restore from the list.
-
Specify the location of the log backup files to be used for point-in-time recovery. These are typically stored on the DXi share configured during plugin setup (
/hana/shared/<SID>/opt/backint/<SID>/). -
Select Third-Party Backup Tool (Backint) as the restore source and click Next.
-
Review the recovery details and click Finish to begin the restore.
-
Monitor progress in the recovery dialog. Once complete, verify that the database is back online and accessible.
Note: Deleting a backup cannot be undone. Make sure to retain at least one full backup before removing older entries.
To remove older backups to free up storage on the DXi system, do the following:
-
In SAP HANA Studio, navigate to the Backup catalog.
-
Right-click on the backup you want to use as the cutoff point. All backups older than this one will be eligible for deletion.
-
Select Delete Older Backups.
-
Choose whether to remove the backups from the catalog only, or from both the catalog and the physical storage on the DXi appliance. For full cleanup, select the option to delete from both.
-
Check the box for Third-Party Backup Tool (Backint) to ensure the deletion is communicated to the DXi system.
-
Confirm and click OK.
-
Verify in the backup catalog that the older backups have been removed.
If issues occur with backup or recovery, review the logs to help diagnose the problem.
The Quantum Backint plugin writes detailed logs for every backup and restore operation. The log file location is set in your QuantumPlugin.conf file (see Install the Quantum Backint Plug-in). By default, logs are written to the system temporary directory if no location is specified.
Logs are also available on the DXi through the DXi Remote Management interface, under the application share you created for SAP HANA backups (see Application-Specific Shares Configuration).
You can control how much detail is recorded in the logs by changing the log (Debug) level in QuantumPlugin.conf.
| Debug Level | Description |
|---|---|
| ERROR | Records only errors. Use for production environments where log size needs to be minimal. |
| WARN | Records warnings and errors. |
| INFO | Records general operational messages, warnings, and errors. Recommended for normal use. |
| DEBUG | Records detailed diagnostic information. Use temporarily when troubleshooting an issue. |
| TRACE | Records the most granular detail. Use only when directed by Quantum Support. |
| NONE | Disables all logging. Not recommended. |
Note: After changing the log level, you do not need to restart SAP HANA. The change takes effect for the next backup or restore operation
If you are unable to resolve an issue using the logs, contact Quantum Support athttps://www.quantum.com/en/service-support/.
Please provide support with the following information to assist with the resolution:
-
DXi model and firmware version.
