What is Backint?
Backint is an SAP-certified interface that connects SAP HANA directly to third-party backup systems. When you initiate a backup from SAP HANA Studio, Backint securely transfers your data to the DXi appliance for storage. Backint also retrieves your chosen backup from the DXi and returns the database to the desired state.
The DXi's built-in deduplication technology reduces the storage footprint of your backups significantly, and the integration is fully transparent from within SAP HANA Studio.
Installation Procedure
Before installing SAP HANA, confirm your server meets the minimum specifications below.
| Requirements | Details |
|---|---|
| Operating System | Open SUSE 15.6 (or compatible enterprise Linux distribution). |
| RAM | 32 GB minimum. |
| CPU | 8 physical cores minimum (Intel with SSE 4.2 instruction set required; AMD is not supported). |
| Disk Space | 512 GB minimum. |
| Network | Network connectivity to your Quantum DXi appliance. |

The system is ready when all services report a running status.
The Quantum Backint plugin is the component that connects SAP HANA to your DXi appliance. This step installs the plugin and links it to your SAP HANA instance.
Important Information
All plugin installation steps must be performed as the <SID>adm user (e.g., agladm), not as root. Running as the wrong user will cause permission errors.
Before installing the plugin, create a dedicated backup share and user account on your DXi system.
-
Log in to the DXi GUI (see Accessing Remote Management).
-
Navigate to Home > Configuration > Application Specific.
-
Create a new application-specific share with deduplication enabled (see Application-Specific Shares Configuration). Give the share a descriptive name such as SAP-HANA-Backup.
-
Navigate to Home > Configuration > System > Application Access Users.
-
Under Users, create a dedicated user account for SAP HANA backups. Set a strong password and grant this user access to the share you just created.
-
Make a note of the following DXi information. You will need this when installing the plugin.
-
Username and Password
-
Share Name
-
DXi IP Address
-
Log in to your SAP HANA server as the <SID>adm user and do the following:
-
Copy the Quantum Backint plugin tarball to your SAP HANA server at
/usr/sap/<SID>/HDB<InstanceNo>, then extract it:su - <SID>adm
cd /usr/sap/<SID>/HDB<InstanceNo>
tar -xvf QuantumBACKINTPluginlinuxS_x86_64-1.0.0-4800.tar
-
Create the following directory and allow permissions:
mkdir /usr/sap/<SID>/SYS/global/hdb/opt/hdbconfig
Example
/usr/sap/CTD/SYS/global/hdb/opt/hdbconfig
example permission - ctdadm sapsys
-
Navigate to the backint plugin directory and run the installer:
cd /hana/shared/<SID>/opt/backint/<SID>
ls
./install.sh --shared-drive=/hana/shared/<SID> --sid=<SID>
Note: The installer automatically creates the necessary folder structure and symbolic links within SAP HANA. No manual file management is required.
-
Open the plugin configuration file in a text editor:
vi /hana/shared/<SID>/opt/backint/<SID>/QuantumPlugin.conf -
Provide the following details in the configuration file:
Field Value Remote DXi appliance IP address or hostname and share name. Username Username of the user created for SAP-HANA backups in the Prepare Your DXi Appliance step. Password Password of the user created for SAP-HANA backups in the Prepare Your DXi Appliance step. Log Directory Path for log files (defaults to system temp directory if not specified) Debug Level INFO recommended for normal operation; DEBUG for troubleshooting. -
Save the configuration file. The plugin is now ready to be connected to SAP HANA Studio.
This section connects the SAP HANA Studio to your Backint plugin, allowing backups to be routed to your DXi system.
-
Open SAP HANA Studio. You can launch it from Files > home > sap > hdbstudio or from the CLI.
-
Click Add System and enter the hostname or IP address of the SAP HANA server, along with the instance number.
-
Set the mode to Multiple Containers and select System Database.
-
Enter your System Administrator credentials (<SID>adm / <password>) and click Finish.
SAP HANA must be configured to use Backint API version 1.5 to work with the Quantum plugin. This can be done using the Studio GUI (recommended) or CLI.
-
In SAP HANA Studio, navigate to SystemDB > Configuration and Monitoring > Open Administration.
-
Go to the Configuration tab and open global.ini.
-
Navigate to the backup section and find the backint_protocol_version setting.
-
Set the value to 1.5 for System, Databases, and Hosts.
If SAP HANA Studio is unavailable or you prefer command-line automation, log in as <SID>adm and run the following CLI commands.
Then run each of the following SQL commands:
Set for System
ALTER SYSTEM ALTER CONFIGURATION ('global.ini','SYSTEM')
SET ('backup','backint_protocol_version')='1.5' WITH RECONFIGURE;
Set for Host
ALTER SYSTEM ALTER CONFIGURATION ('global.ini','HOST', '<hostname>')
SET ('backup','backint_protocol_version')='1.5' WITH RECONFIGURE;
Set for Database
ALTER SYSTEM ALTER CONFIGURATION ('global.ini','DATABASE', '<SID>')
SET ('backup','backint_protocol_version')='1.5' WITH RECONFIGURE;
Register the Quantum plugin configuration file with SAP HANA for each type of backup (catalog, data, and log).
-
In global.ini, navigate to the backup section.
-
For each of the following settings, enter the full path to the plugin configuration file as the value under System, Databases, and Hosts:
-
catalog_backup_parameter_file
-
data_backup_parameter_file
-
log_backup_parameter_file
The path to set is:
/hana/shared/<SID>/opt/backint/<SID>/QuantumPlugin.conf
-
-
Replace <SID> with your actual SAP HANA System ID (e.g., AGL).
By default, SAP HANA may store catalog and log backups locally. Enable the following settings in global.ini to redirect them to the DXi system:
| Setting | Configuration |
|---|---|
| backup > catalog_backup_using_backint | Set to True |
| backup > log_backup_using_backint | Set to True |
Set these to true for System, Databases, and Hosts.
Uninstall the Backint Plug-in
To uninstall the Backint plugin, navigate to the directory where plugin tarball is configured and run following command:
agladm@aglpun-d0339u:/usr/sap/AGL/HDB90> ./uninstall.sh --shared-drive=/hana/shared/<SID> --sid=<SID>
This command will uninstall the Backint plugin and will delete the folder structure. It will also remove the symlinks, such as :
-
/usr/sap/<SID>/SYS/global/hdb/opt/hdbbackint and
-
/usr/sap/<SID>/SYS/global/hdb/opt/hdbconfig/QuantumPlugin.conf.
It will also delete directories, such as:
-
/hana/shared/<SID>/opt/backint/<SID> and /hana/shared/<SID>/opt.
