Important Environmental Considerations About Shipping, Installation and Storage of the H2000

  • If subjected to temperatures below operation temp min +5° C (41° F), then the unit must be allowed to stabilize before switch-on. The transition rate between temperature extremes shall not exceed 25° C (45° F)/hour.
  • Equipment is expected to be removed and installed immediately upon receipt and placed in a climatic controlled environment, however if the installation will not occur within 48 hours of receipt, the shipping and package materials should remain in place.
  • The long term storage environment of the equipment in its original packing material must be maintained at or below 26° C (80° F) / 80% relative humidity; storage duration at these conditions should not exceed 60 days.

Moving the pallet(s)

Recommend moving pallets from dock to data center using a pallet jack.

Moving the H2000 RAID and JBOD chassis

Caution: Due to the weight of the H2000, Quantum recommends that two people lift and move the chassis.

In order for StorNext, license reporting, software updates, and CBA to fully function on the H2000, the following host names should be added to the firewall rules for your network for https port 443:

If the H2000 is used in a StorNext shared storage environment, you might need to update the multipath settings on your StorNext appliance:

  • For StorNext running on Xcellis Workflow Director systems with StorNext 6.4.0 or later (including 7.0.1 or later) installed, default values for Quantum storage products are included in the system's etc/multipath.conf file (required to support the H2000). You do not need to change your multipath settings for H2000 support.
  • For StorNext appliance systems installed in the storage environment that previously ran a version of StorNext prior to 6.4.0, and subsequently upgraded to a newer release, these Quantum product values are included in a reference multipath file on the system named etc/multipath.conf.quantum, but must be manually copied into the etc/multipath.conf file on the server (or on both server nodes in dual-node/HA systems).
    • For a list of the entries included in the StorNext reference multipath file, see Quantum-specific multipath blacklist exceptions and devices; add to etc/multipath.conf if needed.

If the H2000 is used in a StorNext shared storage environment, StorNext client workstations access data directly on the H2000.

  • macOS 10.14.6 is required for StorNext MacOS clients connecting to an H2000 over FC using Xsan, and for StorNext Mac clients connecting via DLC.

  • Update client systems to the same version of StorNext running on the StorNext appliance.
  • Update client systems with the same multipath blacklist exceptions used for the StorNext VMs. For a list of the entries included in the StorNext reference multipath file, see Quantum-specific multipath blacklist exceptions and devices; add to etc/multipath.conf if needed.

Verify that the installation site meets the following networking requirements, depending on the specific H2000 configuration being installed.

Network settings must be configured for the network(s) to be used for the installation, including IP addresses, subnet (netmasking), gateway, and DNS (if used):

  • Quantum recommends a configured and available Domain Name System (DNS) on the network. A DNS is recommended for hostname resolution and nameserver recognition across StorNext clients. If the environment does not have a DNS server, use IP addresses — not hostnames — to identify system services (such as NTP and SMTP) and clients.
  • Add DNS entries for the hostnames of the system to the DNS server of the network used for the system.

  • Reserve IP addresses on the network for the system:

    Note: If the installation site supports DHCP, ensure there are adequate IP addresses available for the DHCP server to assign IP addresses for all interfaces required on the system.

    For Eth and FC configurations:

    • Reserve 2 IP addresses for the H2000 management network.

    For Eth configurations only:

    • Reserve IP addresses for the storage network:

      • 4 IP addresses are required for dual-subnet storage (2 IP addresses for each controller; Quantum recommends)

      • 2 IP addresses are required for single-subnet configuration.

  • Understand how to zone your particular FC switch, if needed, for the environment. This applies to H2000 systems with FC cards.
  • Understand how to configure your particular ethernet switch. This applies to H2000 systems with Eth cards.
  • Some of these procedures will require you to access the command line with an SSH utility. Here are some options:

1 GbE or 10 GbE switches used for management network connections must be compatible with copper 10GBASE-T cables. SFP/SFP+ optical connections to management switches are not supported natively.

Storage Area Network (SAN) and FC switch compatible with the 32 Gb FC cards installed in the system. The cards are backward compatible with existing 16 Gb FC and 8 Gb FC environments. They are not compatible with 4 Gb FC environments.

Information included in the H2000 box provides the World Wide Port Names (WWPNs) for all FC ports to establish proper FC switch zoning. For information on zoning your switch for FC H2000 models, see FC zoning (for Fibre Channel networks).

FC zoning allows you to partition the FC fabric into one or more zones. Each zone defines the set of FC initiators (client workstations) and FC targets (for example, the H2000) that can communicate with each other.

If you need to configure FC zoning, identify whether you need to perform WWPN-based zoning or port-based zoning, and use this approach when zoning the switch.

WWPN-based zoning

The H2000 WWPNs will be visible to and accessible by all hosts in the same zone. If you need to limit this visibility, you can optionally configure FC zoning by WWPN for the environment. This must be performed on the customer-provided FC switch. Refer to the documentation for the customer-provided FC switch for details on how to configure FC zoning.

H2000 WWPNs are displayed on the Storage page of the H-Series UI. Select Storage from the left navigation menu.

Prior to or during product installation, or when not on the H-Series UI, you can refer to the H2000 Customer Site Configuration Data Document. The WWPNs for controller A (bottom) and controller B (top) are printed in the document and also available in a text file on the USB drive.

Port-based zoning

If the environment uses port-based zoning, you do not need to use WWPNs. The ports that attach the storage must be included in the zone. Refer to the documentation for the customer-provided FC switch for details on how to configure FC zoning.

After configuring FC zoning, and completing configuration steps (in the installation process), the initiators (client workstations) should be visible. You will most likely need to force a rescan and/or perform a Loop Initialization Protocol (LIP) so the H2000 storage (LUNs) become available to the client workstations.

  • The H2000 supports remote direct memory access (RDMA) and requires a RDMA over Converged Ethernet v2 (RoCE v2) network infrastructure, including NICs that support RoCE v2 and Ethernet switches that support data center bridging.
  • H2000 1.0 software supports PFC (Priority Flow Control) as well as "global pause" configuration; global pause configuration is not required.

    • Network Switch requirement:

    • Two (2) subnets

  • A DHCP server can be used for the storage network.
  • Linux Clients must be prepared to operate with iSCSI storage. For information on configuring the 100 GbE Network for the H2000, refer to the Quick Start Instructions.

Verify that the installation site meets the following multipath I/O stack requirements, depending on the specific H2000 configuration being installed.

The H2000 is designed to be installed into a rack that meets the EIA-310 standard at a minimum. See EIA-310 Rack Standard of usable space measured from front rack frame to the rear rack frame. The H2000 requires 2U of rack space, and it should be installed into the rack at the lowest possible location in the rack to keep the load on the rack balanced.

H2000 rails are toolless, and support square and round rack holes.
