Replace Compute Node Module

Each 4U90 Twin Server Chassis contains two compute node modules.

Remove Compute Module

Caution: Remove the power ONLY from the compute module being serviced. Removing the power from both modules in the chassis has the potential to cause a service outage to the X200 system.

  1. Hold down the power button of the compute module to be removed for at least 4 seconds.

  1. Disconnect all network and system cables from the compute module.

    Note: Before disconnecting cables, document the cable configuration. The cabling must be reconnected to the module in the exact same configuration.

  2. Unlock the left and right latches on the side of the compute module.

  3. Remove the compute module from the chassis and place on a flat surface.

Remove the following components from the Compute Module. These components will be installed in the replacement module.

The mezzaine card is attached to the mezzanine node module, which is attached to the compute node module in the 4U90 Twin Server Chassis.

To access the mezzanine card, you will need to remove the mezzanine (node) module from the compute module.

  1. Unscrew the four screw thumbs on top of the module.

  2. Lift the left and right latches to the unlock position.

  3. Vertically lift the mezzanine module out of the chassis.

  4. Flip the mezzanine module over and place on a flat surface. You now have access to the mezzanine card.

  5. Using a Phillips screwdriver, unscrew the mezzanine card from the module.

The 4U90 twin server chassis has eight 32GB RDIMM memory cards per compute node, for a total of 16 cards per twin server chassis.

Caution:  

  • Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) can damage electronic components including memory cards. To avoid damaging DIMM cards, it is important to handle them carefully. The following measures are generally sufficient.

    • Use a grounded wrist strap designed to prevent static discharge.

    • Handle the memory module by its edges only.

    • Put the memory modules into the antistatic bags when not in use.

  • Exercise extreme caution when installing or removing memory modules to prevent damage to the DIMMs or slots.

  1. To remove a DIMM, push the release tabs outwards on both ends of the DIMM slot to unlock it. Remove the DIMM memory module.

The 4U90 twin server chassis has four network interface (NIC) cards and two host bus adapter (HBA) cards. The cards are inserted from the top into keyed slots on the mother board and fastened with a retaining clip. Though the two types of cards are physically different, the removal and installation is the same.

WARNING: Use care when removing the cards. They are very close to each other and there is a rick of damaging components on the card

  1. Loosen the captive screw where the top of the card meets the chassis.

  2. Pull the clip away from the chassis and card.

  3. Carefully remove the card by pulling it up and away from the motherboard.

Replace Compute Module

WARNING: Use care when replacing the cards. They are very close to each other and there is a rick of damaging components on the card

  1. Install the card by carefully pushing it down until it is completely seated into the appropriate keyed slot in the motherboard.

  2. Insert the clip to connect the chassis to the card.

  3. Tighten the captive screw where the top of the card meets the chassis.

Important Information

Install the DIMM cards in the exact same slots shown below. Failure to install the cards in the correct slots will cause memory issues with the compute module.

Caution: Exercise extreme caution when installing memory card to prevent damage to the DIMMs or slots.

  1. Align the key of the DIMM card with the receptive point on the memory slot and with your thumbs on both ends of the module, press it straight down into the slot until the module snaps into place.

  2. Press the release tabs to the locked position to secure the DIMM module into the slot

  1. Using a Phillips screwdriver, screw the new mezzanine card into the mezzanine module.

  2. Flip the mezzanine module over and place above the compute module. Make sure the left and right latches are in the unlocked position. Align the mezzanine module vertically and lower into the compute module.

  3. Rotate the left and right latches forward to the lock positions.

  4. Carefully push down the middle section of the module to ensure connectors are fully engaged.

  5. Fasten the 4 blue thumb screws on top of the module.

  1. Carefully slide the compute module back into the chassis.

  2. Lock the left and right latches on the side of the compute module.

  3. Reconnect the power cable to the power supply and all network and system cables to the compute node.

  1. Press the node power button once. The compute node control board will initiate the power up sequence.

  2. Wait a few minutes for the node to power up and spin up all disks.
