Always Disable “Over Commit” Before Creating LUNs When Using StorNext with Q-Tier

Why Disable "Over Commit" When Using StorNext and Q-Tier?

When you use StorNext with Quantum’s QXS Q-Tier, always disable the “over commit” feature before you create any LUNs. If “over commit” is enabled, it is possible to overprovision the LUNs and unknowingly run out of disk space. This could result in the loss of files that were written into the LBA range that was not provisioned with physical storage. This article provides some guidelines and recommendations.

Notes on Q-Tier Capacity Allocation and Utilization

Q-Tier determines used capacity based on used pages in the virtual LUN, and it determines which pages are used based on which pages are allocated. Pages are allocated when being written to by StorNext.

LTFS Software vs Model B & Model C Drives

Model B vs Model C tape drives.

When LTFS firmware came out Quantum was using Model B tape drives but over time have upgraded to using Model C tape drives.

LTFS can we used with MAC OSX, Red Hat or SUSE Linux and Windows.

Windows has two versions of LTFS software one for Model B tape drives and one for Model C tape drives.

These two versions of software cannot be loaded on the same computer at the same time.

You need to determine your drive type and load the correct version of LTFS software.

These drives look differently.  Please refer to the picture below to determine your model.

LTO Tape Drive Cleaning

LTO Tape Drive Cleaning

Over time all tape drives require cleaning via dedicated cleaning tapes. The average cleaning tape can be used up to 50 times before it is used up and considered “expired”. Once a cleaning tape is expired it is no longer viable and needs to be discarded. Cleaning tapes are considered consumable items that customers must provide in order to keep their tape drives functioning properly.

Extended Data Life Management (EDLM) Best Practices

Extended Data Life Management (EDLM) Best Practices

The EDLM feature allows customers to perform media scans to validate the integrity of the data written to the tape. These scans can be run on a proactive or reactive basis and scan policies can be defined to suite the customer’s needs.  Defining the EDLM scan policies properly to minimize the performance impact of your normal backup jobs is a very important process. Defining these policies can be complex as every customer has different backup requirements or media use cases. The purpose of this Best Practice article is to help define when and how EDLM scans should be performed to maximize the feature along with minimizing the impact to your backup requirements.

Scalar LTFS (SLTFS) - Tape Formatting

With older firmware 2.3 and older you have to format each tape and then it will be automatically attached and visible to clients mapped to the SLTFS.

With firmware version 2.4 and newer there is a process that you have to follow.

Load tapes into the library IE station and the SLTFS will automatically import the tapes into data slots.  These tapes will then show up as discovered media.

All discovered media should be formatted right after import and then they will show as scratch media.

Scratch media can be used for creating Volume Groups and are also used when a tape gets full and need to span to a new cartridge.
