Dot Hill Systems: Finding the Product Serial Number

Dot Hill Systems: Finding the Product Serial Number

This document provides information on finding the system serial number for Dot Hill-branded storage systems.

There are three ways to locate the serial number on a Dot Hill system:

1. In the Disk Management Utility (GUI)
2. Using the CLI
3. On a sticker on the RAID chassis

To avoid confusion that may arise when trying to locate the correct sticker on the chassis, we recommend getting the serial number from the GUI or the CLI.

Recognizing a Dot Hill System Serial Number

Dot Hill system serial numbers have the format DHSIHOU-YYWWxxxxxx. The first seven characters are constant, and present on every Dot Hill-branded RAID chassis. After the hyphen, the next four characters refer to the year (YY) and week (WW) of manufacture. The final characters (xxxxxx) are alphanumeric.

Locating the Serial Number in the Disk Management Utility

On the System page, select the Front or Rear tab. The serial number of interest belongs to the RAID chassis, which is the top chassis shown on the System page. To display the Enclosure Information popup, hover the cursor over one of the “ears” (far left or right). The serial number you need is the Midplane Serial number.

Locate the Serial Number using the Command-Line Interface (CLI)

The show fru command provides a list of FRUs and their serial numbers. The first FRU in the list is CHASSIS_MIDPLANE. The serial number of the chassis midplane is the system serial number.

For the chassis midplane, the system serial number is reported under two different descriptors: Serial Number, and Configuration SN. For the other FRUs, Serial Number reports the serial number of the FRU. But for all FRUs, the Configuration SN reports the system serial number.

Locating the Serial Number on a Sticker on the RAID Chassis

A sticker with an example of a system serial number is shown below.

On all Dot Hill RAID chassis, on the left side (when viewed from the front), there are two labels. The one closest to the front has the system serial number on it. If your rack isn’t open on its left side, you need to pull the chassis from the rack to see the label.

All Dot Hill RAID chassis also have a system serial number label on the front, but the label appears in different locations, depending on the system.

2U12 RAID Chassis

On the interior of the 2U12 chassis, when viewed from the front, the label is on the bottom left. It is beneath the left bank of disk drives. You will have to remove one or several of the drives to see the label.

2U24 RAID Chassis

On the interior of 2U24 chassis, when viewed from the front, the label is on left wall. You will need to remove several of the drives on the left side of the chassis to see the label.

2U48 RAID Chassis

The 2U48 chassis is two units tall, and has three drawers that insert from the front. When the drawers are fully inserted, there is a “lip” along the front of the chassis. The serial number sticker is mounted internally on the lip, on the right front bottom of the chassis.

4U56 RAID Chassis

The 4U56 chassis is four units tall, and has two drawers that insert from the front. When the drawers are fully inserted, there is a “lip” along the front of the chassis. The serial number sticker is mounted internally on the lip, on the right front bottom of the chassis.
