StorNext RAS Message - Physical Media Changer tape drive [X] : Maintenance operation failure

The Physical Media Changer tape drive [X] : Maintenance operation failure message refers to the automatic drive cleaning function in StorNext for a tape library. It has two possible causes, based on the details given under the ‘SR Notes’ section of the message.

When a drive requires cleaning, it returns a signal to StorNext. When StorNext receives that signal, a cleaning session is started, and it will not use that drive again to store or retrieve data until the cleaning session finishes. If a problem is encountered during this cleaning session, a RAS message is generated.

SR Notes Section: No Cleaning Media Available

If the SR Notes section reads: “No cleaning media available for the Physical Media Changer with the Physical Tape Drive having Serial Number [X]”, this means that StorNext could not mount any cleaning media in the drive specified in the message.

If this happens:

  1. Load a piece of cleaning media into the library, either in a cleaning media slot, or in the partition to which the tape drive is assigned. (See the StorNext User’s Guide for instructions on adding and ejecting tapes from the library.)

  2.  Start the cleaning process from the StorNext GUI:
    1. Make sure the cleaning media has been properly inserted into the library.
    2. Select Tools > Storage Manager > Storage Components.
    3. Select the drive serial number that requires cleaning, and click Clean.

Note:  You can find the association between the drive serial number and the current device path (/dev/sg###) by issuing the following CLI command in the root shell on the primary MDC:

# fsconfig | egrep "pathname|serial|Alias|^$"

If automatic cleaning fails to work after a cleaning media has been properly inserted into the library, please contact Quantum StorNext Support.

SR Notes Section: Cleaning Media Had No Effect

If the SR Notes section reads: “Cleaning media <MediaID> had no effect on drive /dev/sg###”, this means that:

  • A cleaning media is available in the library.
  • However, after the cleaning media was used on the drive, the tape drive reported a status back to StorNext that it still needs to be cleaned.
  • This indicates that the cleaning media was not effective.

If the cleaning media has been used many times and is near its effective use, eject it from the library and replace it with a new cleaning media. (See the StorNext User’s Guide for instructions on adding and ejecting tapes from the library.)

After you insert a new cleaning media into the library, start the cleaning process from the StorNext GUI:

  1. Make sure the media has been properly inserted into the library.
  2. Select Tools > Storage Manager > Storage Components.
  3. Select the drive serial number that requires cleaning, and click Clean.

If the drive continues to report that it is in need of cleaning even after you have inserted new cleaning media, contact your library support provider.
