Appliance Controller Compatibility

This page describes the supported features and configurations for the Appliance Controller. Refer to the following sections:

Appliance Controller Supported Features and Configurations

Appliance Controller Compatibility

Appliance Controller Supported Features and Configurations

The Appliance Controller supports the following features and configurations. For information about specific Appliance Controller features and configurations, see the Appliance Controller Documentation Center.

Protocol Support

The following file-sharing protocols are supported for StorNext NAS on Linux, macOS, and Windows operating systems.

Important

If you will be using SMB and NFS protocols simultaneously, you must create separate share directories for each file-sharing protocol.

Protocol

Supported Versions / Features

SMB

  • SMB 1 (CIFS) – Quantum does not recommend
  • SMB 2
  • SMB 3
  • Protocol auto-negotiation with client
  • macOS Named Streams support for file systems using the SMB protocol only that are not shared with other protocols, such as Xsan or NFS

NFS

  • NFSv3
  • NFSv4

Tested Scalability Limits

The following scalability limits have been tested and verified for StorNext NAS.

Maximum Number of Connected Users

Appliance

100 connected users for a single appliance

  • Xcellis Workflow Director
  • Artico Archive Gateway
  • StorNext Metadata Appliance

2000 connected users per gateway

  • Xcellis Workflow Extender
  • G300 Gateway

User Directory Support

The Appliance Controller supports the following user directories.

Important

You can use only one authentication scheme for a NAS cluster.

Authentication Scheme

Supported Versions / Features

Microsoft Active Directory

  • 2008
  • 2012
  • 2016
  • Unix extensions (RFC2307)
  • RID UID mapping

OpenLDAP

  • Samba 3.2 schema extensions
  • OpenLDAP with Kerberos

Apple Open Directory

  • OS X 10.5 or higher
  • Uses CLI configuration procedure

Local Users

Local users can be created directly on the appliance

Scale-Out NAS Clustering

A scale-out NAS cluster provides clients direct access to both SMB and NFSv3 shares from any node within the cluster. In addition, a scale-out NAS cluster manages both health monitoring and failover for the NAS cluster nodes. Of the supported cluster configurations, scale-out NAS clusters offer the best possible performance and reliability.

For more information, see NAS Clusters in the Appliance Controller Documentation Center.

Feature

Description

NAS Clustering

Scale-out NAS clusters can be made up of any combination of the following components:

  • Xcellis Workflow Directors, G300s, and Xcellis Workflow Extenders
  • Appliances supporting CentOS6 and CentOS7
  • StorNext 5.4 and StorNext 6.0.x

NAS Failover

Scale-out NAS clusters support NAS failover for NFSv3 and SMB protocols

DNS Load Distribution

Evenly distribute client connections to nodes within a NAS cluster, facilitating greater network bandwidth and better redistribution results after a NAS failover occurs.

To take advantage of DNS load distribution, you must be running StorNext 6 or later.

NAS VIP Pool

To enable scale-out NAS clustering, you must configure a NAS cluster VIP pool, which consists — at a minimum — of 1 VIP for each node in your cluster.

Scale-Out NAS Cluster = NAS Cluster VIP + VIP Pool

The VIP pool enables NAS failover and DNS load distribution for scale-out NAS clusters.

Maximum Supported NAS Nodes

NAS clusters can consist up to 16 NAS nodes.

Configuration Mirroring

Each NAS cluster node inherits the share configuration from the master cluster node.

User Directory

All NAS nodes share the same user directory configuration.

File Locking

Clustering propagates file locking across all NAS nodes in the cluster.

Appliance Controller Service Features

The following service features are supported for the Appliance Controller.

Service Feature

Automatic Appliance Controller configuration journaling

Support bundle creation

Import and export of Appliance Controller configuration

Batch share creation

Automatic rolling upgrades in NAS cluster configurations

Over-the-air code updates
